I got a new drumkit this last weekend. I got the pdp fs and am really liking it so far. Its a birch kit so its way brighter than my maple kit is. Its kind of fun having 2 kits with 2 totally different sounds.

What does birch sound like? I know Pearl was really into the fiberglass heads in the 80s but don't remember what wood they used. I've heard plenty of maple, but probably just don't know what the birch sounds like.
I was more a piano / keys guy back when anyway.

Birch has a real bright sound to it. Its taking my ears some getting used to because of that brightness I can't wait to hear it recorded!

Well this is what we bass players do. We own many different types of basses for different sounds.

Don't think you can really do that with drum kits though since they take up so much space.

Yes they do I have 2 now a maple kit and this birch kit I really don't have anymore room for any others lol. I really love them both and love how their vary different from each other.

congrats with your new birch drum kit!
I recently got a birch kit too, and it sounds awesome
my kit is a 6 piece pearl vision VBA with 10 12 14 and 16 tom, but I like the sound of the maple kit more though.

OK I'm going to ask what may be a weird question, to a drummer anyway:
Do you ever mix and match sets? I mean, when I was a keyboard player in the 80s / early 90s, we would stack them / set them at right angles, play with a hand on each, etc. I know the kids now make fun of us for doing that, but it was LOADS of amazing fun! What you could mix doing that! Anyway, do you mix and match some birch and some maple? I don't know if that would work with drums or not.

Goddess come and talk to me when you have 5 kits. lol.

Seriously though I am sure if you had the room you would own 10 kits.

@ leo, well for me birch sounds bright and penetrating, and maple has a dark and rounded sound to it. and yes I'd like to mix and match my drums. infact I'm currently using Erik singer sig maple snare with my birch kit.

They make kits where the higher drums are birch and the lower toms and kick drum are maple. I wouldn't mind having one of those 1 day but need a bigger house first lol.

My first kit was a pearl forum. I worked that kit hard. Was not bad at all for the money I payed for it.
